The Mongolian Altai mountains of western Mongolian offer a beautiful landscape coupled with three unique cultures - Mongolians, Kazakhs, and Tuvans. Doing hiking in western Mongolia while our camels cart the material and visiting this area's nomadic people between the snow covered peaks of the Altai Mountains means experiencing something that cannot be repeated anywhere else in the world. Come and will feel the beauty of unexplored wilderness and experience the freedom of nomadic.

Program

Day 1. Welcome at your arrival at the Ulaanbaatar airport. Transfer to your hotel (Standard category). City tour. Visit of Nogd Khaan summer palace. Lunch in a restaurant of the city. Visit of the Natural history museum. Briefing on the trip. Overnight at the hotel. 

Day 2. Transfer to the airport and flight towards the Mongolian farwest (4 hours). Welcome in Olgii by our local team. After lunch visite the local museum with comprenhensive information of flora and fauna of Bayan Ulgii aimag as well as it colourfull traditional costumes. Dinner and night in kazakh ger camp.

Day 3. We will drive on 4wd minivans (Forgons) along the north-westernly route  towards Shiveet Hairkhan Uul (mountain) on Tsagaan Gol (valley). Scenic view on driving: numerous petroglyphs and Turkic stone men bearing witness of the Bronze Age at the time of the Huns and Tutkic Beautiful views of the entire Altai Mountains range Numerous Tuvan nomads live by the Altai Tavanbogd National Park Shiveet Hairhan is holy for them, so there is no hunting, and usually possible to see a lot of Siberian Ibex in the early morning. Pitch camp.  5-6 driving hours; 165 km

Day 4 and 5. With the support of camels, we will start trekking for 35km (2 days) to the base camp area at the edge of the 20km long Potanina glacier, that runs down from the highest mountains in Mongolia. Tavanbogd means "The Holy Five" referring to the peaks of Huiten (4374m and the highest), Naran, Ölgii, Burget and Nairamdal. It is a stunning setting with the awe inspiring massif of high snow capped peaks. Dinner in bivouac and night under the tent.

Day 6. We will remain in the same camp and make a day hike up the non-technical heights of Malchin Uul, where we are likely to trek up through snow. There is also a smaller hill nearby allowing for excellent and stunning views of the mountains, mainly into Russian Altai, but in the distance also China.

Day 7. Tsagaan Gol Valley. Hiking back on the other side of the Tsaagan River (White River) to Shiveet Hairhan Mountain, where the Tuva people live. Here we will now be able to view the biggest petrolgyphs from the period of the Huns (approx 200 B.C.). The Huns were the reason for the Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huangdi to build the Great Wall of China. Visit of some Tuvan families. Dinner in bivouac and night under the tent.

Day 8 and 9. We will allocate two days to cross the Altai Mountains range which is a total of 32km. You will be able to see remote and spectacular country from 3600m high. The first day we will pitch our camp before the snows or in the snows before the pass. Beautiful and wide views. The next day we will cross very near the peak of Tsaagan Hairhan Uul (Holy White peak 3668m being the highest elevation of the entire journey), then we will ride down by a beautifull valley and reach the Green Lake. Here are dramatic landscapes of small lake and patches of larch forests. The area is the habitat of the Snow Leopard and its prey species the Siberian Ibex, as well as the rare Altai Snowcock. Dinner in bivouac and night under the tent.

Day 10. Going down by beautifull valley. we willl reach the Green Lake. Here are dramatic landscapes of small lake and patches of larch forests. This is wild and remote place with many white water springs. Good to swim. Dinner in bivouac and night under the tent.

From day 11 to 13. Hiking in the very remote area of Syrgaali. The remote area is divided from China by the high snow capped mountains and has the two stunning lakes of Hoton Nuur and Hurgan Nuur. Both of them are the source of the Hovd River. Along the lakes you will see a wooden Kazakh Old Mosque and the chance to visit Nomadic Kazakh and Eaglehunter families and feel their wonderfull hospitalities. There are some fine trekking possibilities on the North West of Hoton Nuur. Dinner in bivouac and night under the tent.

From day 14 to 16. After two days hiking, we will come to DayanNuur, one of the crystal clear lakes of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Two nights by Dayan Nuur. You will have the chance to try the fishing for the Altai grayling, lenok and others. Dinner in bivouac and night under the tent.

Day 17. Drive back to Olgii town. Diner and night in gers camp. 

Day 18. Transfer to the airport and flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to your hotel. Free diner and night at the Hotel.

Day 19. Breakfast. Visit of Gandantegchilen monastery and introduction to Buddhism in the Buddhist center of Mongolia. Lunch in local restaurant. Shopping in the afternoon. visit of the black market and cashmere factory. Farewell diner in on of the best restaurant of the capitale. Night at the hotel.

Day20. Breakfast. Transfer to the airport. Departure.
